‘Stick’ Review: Owen Wilson’s Endearing Apple TV+ Golf Comedy Is Ideal Summer Comfort Viewing

Stick, Apple TV+’s new golf comedy starring Owen Wilson, does not come with the tagline “For fans of Shrinking and Ted Lasso.” It doesn’t need to: Between the cuddly yet poignant mood, the found-family ensemble, the focus on flawed but generally non-toxic male role models and the overall Dad TV vibe, there’s no mistaking who its target audience is meant to be. But familiarity isn’t necessarily a drawback when it comes to comfort viewing, and certainly not for a rookie that can play the game nearly as well as the old pros. While not, at this point, quite as ambitious as its actual tagline (“Take a big swing”) might suggest, its assured tone, fat-free storytelling and, most especially, winning cast could give Stick everything it needs to develop into the platform’s next big crowd-pleaser. Stick The Bottom Line'Shrinking' and 'Ted Lasso' fans, this one's...

Pop Star King Princess Didn’t Think She Could Be an Actress (Then She Talked to a Psychic)

King Princess’ first inkling that she might end up an actor came from a deck of tarot cards (“You’re going to act,” the clairvoyant informed her). The second clue was the WME agent who kept calling and calling. In other words, the signs, both celestial and otherwise, were all there — she just wasn’t quite ready to see them. “I ignored everyone for as long as I could,” says the indie pop star, born Mikaela Straus. “I was in full music mode.” But a few years — and a minor creative crisis — later, the idea started to feel less far-fetched. At 26, with two albums, a Coachella slot and a Saturday Night Live debut under her belt, King Princess found herself questioning what came next. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she grew up surrounded by music — her father, Oliver Straus,...

Rapper and actor Kid Cudi testified Thursday that he believes Sean “Diddy” Combs was behind the bombing of his Porsche in 2012 and that the mogul trespassed in his Los Angeles home after the fallen rap and fashion icon learned both men were romantically involved with R&B singer Cassie Ventura. Kid Cudi, whose real name is Scott Mescudi, took the stand on Thursday in Combs’ sex trafficking and racketeering trial in Manhattan, where the mogul’s team of attorneys is defending him against federal prosecutors who allege in a five-count indictment that he created a criminal enterprise to facilitate his abuse and exploitation of women, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct. McQuarrie, who was a writer-producer on 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, was a guest on the most recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, posted on Monday, where he told Josh Horowitz that he already has the ideas set for the third installment. “Is Top Gun 3 harder to crack in some ways than Top Gun: Maverick?,” Horowitz asked, to which McQuarrie responded, saying, “No, it’s already in the bag.” Horowitz followed up by asking, “You’ve cracked it?” And the Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning director said, “Yeah, I already know what it is.” Related Stories Movies 'Lilo & Stitch' Box Office Mayhem: All the Records Broken as Pic Zooms Past $400M Globally Movies 'Lilo & Stitch' Blows Up Memorial Day Box Office With...

PCH Finally Reopens Following Fire as Malibu Businesses Still Face a “911 Catastrophic Situation”

Nearly five months after the devastating wildfires that burned much of the Pacific Palisades and Malibu — as across town Altadena faced a similar fate — the famed Pacific Coast Highway is finally reopened to visitors. It’s a welcome announcement this holiday weekend, following months in which Malibu’s beachside businesses that were lucky enough to remain standing were blocked from the majority of their customers. And many have been struggling for most of the year as a result. “If you leave Malibu and you’re anywhere else, the world has moved on. There’s no awareness that, oh, the city is still in this 911 catastrophic situation,” says Malibu Farm owner Helene Henderson, acknowledging the Malibu Pier hotspot’s business has been down at least 50 percent — and more on the weekdays — since the January fires. Because even though Malibu Canyon and Kanan Dume Road have remained open for...

Fox Story. Emily Osborne, who served as head of production and joined A24 from RadicalMedia, was also impacted by the scale-back of the division. The non-fiction team will be staying on long enough to aid in the transition of ongoing projects. Upcoming non-fiction titles include the Death Match wrestling doc from the Philippou Brothers, the filmmakers behind Talk to Me, and true...

Elizabeth Banks, Patti LuPone, Marcello Hernandez and Bradley Whitford on Scenes That Spiked Their Anxiety and Which ‘White Lotus’ Role They Covet Most

This year, we saw supporting performances that popped in major returning dramas like The White Lotus and Severance, and also in newcomers like The Residence and The Day of the Jackal. Stars from Emmy contenders spoke to THR about the role they covet, the scene that spiked their anxiety and what their character would do in a recession. Elizabeth Banks ‘The Better Sister’ (Prime Video) My favorite thing about my character Shamelessness. More specifically, that she has outed almost all of her secrets so nobody can weaponize them against her. That’s powerful. And the most frustrating thing She has terrible taste in men and fashion. The scene that spiked my anxiety Drowning in the ocean . I’m not a strong swimmer, and who knows what’s in the water? We pulled out a dirty diaper! The show I’d love to do a crossover episode with: The White Lotus. I might end up dead but the...

Barry Diller Says John Travolta Exited ‘American Gigolo’ Because of “Somewhat Gay Subtext”

According to Barry Diller, John Travolta backed out of starring in American Gigolo because of the film’s “somewhat gay subtext.” In his tell-all memoir, Who Knew, the power player recalls a time when the Grease star was attached to star in the Paul Schrader written- and directed-movie before he had to step away. In his book, Diller writes that Travolta told then-Paramount Pictures president Michael Eisner he couldn’t lead the project because he was grieving the death of his mother and then-girlfriend Diana Hyland. “He slumped down in a chair in Michael’s office, started to cry and said, ‘I can’t do American Gigolo. I’m too sad. I’m still in mourning. It’s the wrong thing for me to do. You have to let me out of it,’” Diller, who was the CEO of Paramount at the time, writes. “Michael came down to my office and said, ‘John’s just left, and...
